Champions Gymnastics says a Heartfelt Goodbye to Megan Conway and Berrie Onishenko !
The Champions Gymnastics Family is sad to be losing two of its key coaches.
Berrie Onishenko and Megan Conway will unfortunately be leaving us in July. Berrie's husband has been accepted to a University in Ontario for a study program that is not offered in Alberta. Berrie was very sad to announce her departure and so were we. We wish Berrie and Dave all the best in their future.
Megan's long-time boyfriend is a talented script-writer and has been assigned to a major movie project in Vancouver; he must relocate in order to fulfill this obligation. Vancouver is the Canadian hub for the Movie Industry. Megan was equally sad to have to relocate.

Generous donations buy Champions's members a NEW FLOOR Exercise !
Champions Gymnastics is proud to announce that due to many generous donations, its members are now able to benefit from a serious upgrade to the existing large floor exercise surface which is currently in the gym.
It became apparent last year that our competitive and devlopmental gymnasts were at a serious disadvantage by not having a spring floor with enough "spring". Michel Arsenault made a call for donations to upgrade the floor by changing the current base of the floor from a "foam cube" base to a "spring" base.
Edmontonian's generosity is legendary and in keeping wih this tradition, many of our competitive and developmental members came out BIG for this project.
The full amount for this project was raised in less than 7 days !
This will now allow our members (the developmental and competitive especially) to tumble full routines on the actual full floor ! It will also make for an even more orthopedically sound floor for all of our members.
There will also be a commemorative recognition plaque installed in the gym as a humble way to say thanks !

Natasha Hallett update
Natasha Hallett, former long-time athlete of Michel and Valerie (1984-1993), has been a member of the prestigious Cirque du Soleil since 1993, soon after retiring from gymnastics and after the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
It came as a great shock to Michel and Valerie when the news came that Natasha suffered a major accident while performing in the "La Nouba" show in Orlando, Florida a few days ago.
Natasha suffered a free-fall onto the stage from approximately 40 feet in the air while executing a manouevre in which her character (The Green Bird), was "flying". She suffered extensive injuries and was airlifted to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
Champions Gymnastics wishes to respect the privacy of the matter and will not disclose information it has no first-hand information about.
Natasha is recuperating from the accident and from the ensuing surgeries. In rehab, she has already started to demonstrate the character that made her an Olympic gymnast and a world-class performer for the Cirque du Soleil.
"Her doctors look at her determination and her progress so far and they are just shaking their heads in disbelief" said Beverley Hallett, Natasha's mom.
Well, Michel and Valerie sure aren't surprised at Natasha's courage and rapid recovery from this near fatal disaster.
"Natasha is one tough cookie...not much gets in her way. Asked what Natasha's plans were, Beverley didn't hesitate a second and said "She wants to get back to work!" related Michel.
All of us at Champions Gymnastics want to extend our most sincere and deepest wishes to Natasha for a speedy and full recovery. In fact, the competitive gymnasts at Champions sent Natasha a get-well-soon card, who has now been transfered from the hospital to her home in Orlando.
" Natasha is a strong person with a will of steel..we know that she will fight through this and emerge with the same character that she displayed for her entire career as a gymnast. We have followed her Cirque career since 1993 and we are so proud of her. We wish her the absolute best. Valerie and I are completely convinced that she will see this through with strength and determination. We love her so much." said Michel & Valerie.

Edmonton, November 14, 2006 (Revised Feb.19, 2007)
Jacquelyn Phillips signs with Central Michigan University !
Champions Gymnastics is proud to announce that one of its athletes, Miss Jacquelyn Phillips has signed with Central Michigan University for a full scholarship, effective Fall of 2007 !
Jacquelyn will be joining the Chippewa team in late summer 2007. Central Michigan University is located in Mount Pleasant, Michigan and has a long standing tradition of excellence in the sport of artistic gymnastics.
Jacquelyn will be entering her sophomore year as one of the team's newest canadian gymnasts. CMU has recruited gymnasts from Canada in the past and has obviously found that canadians make excellent members !
Jacquelyn's new coach, Jerry Reighard, visited Champions from November 11-14 and worked with Jacquelyn's long-time coaches, Michel and Valerie, in order to familiarize himself with Jacquelyn's training and skills.
Jacquelyn and her mother, Judy, have just returned from a whirlwind tour of the CMU campus, residences and gym, which took place from November 9-11. Jacquelyn signed her Letter of Intent on November 10th, 2006.
"We are excited, proud and a little sad at the same time" said Michel Arsenault, who has been coaching Jacquelyn for the last 12 years.
"Jacquelyn has been a constant presence in the gym for all of those years; when Valerie and I opened Champions Gymnastics, she followed us from her previous club with no hesitation. Her loyalty is a testimony to the strength of our bond with her.", added Michel.
"Our role is to make sure that Jacquelyn completes her canadian gymnastics career with as much success as possible and once National Championships will be over in May of 2007, our role will be to prepare her for college gymnastics. The Code of Points that Jacquelyn is being judged under is very different from the one they use in college in the U.S. They still use the classic 10.00 pts score system and skills are assigned difficulty values that are quite different than the current ones", explained Valerie.
"Jacquelyn is a phenomenal person and a very good gymnast. For Valerie and I, this feels a little like sending our own daughter to college...we've been with her for so many years. In fact, we are sending our own daughter Sara to college too next year.....they sure grow up fast !" said Michel.
"Coach Reighard really liked the kind of technical gymnastics that Jacquelyn does and that's partly why he recruited her for his program. Jacquelyn is also a top ranked student at her current school, Austin O'Brien. Jacquelyn's focus will also be on her academic goals. She is going into "Pre-Medicine" and Judy (Jacquelyn's mom) who is a nurse said she really liked what she saw in CMU's medical program." Michel related.
CBC (French & Engligh networks) and Global TV interviewed Jacquelyn for their evening sports news, which was aired on Wednesday Nov. 15th.
"Success in gymnastics cannot be only measured by making the Olympic team or by international level results; getting a fully paid College degree and being able to compete for your college at the same time is also one very special accomplishment ! We are extremely proud of her and will always be there for her ", concluded Michel Arsenault.

Doing good but missing home !
Well, this has been quite the experience so far. I have been lucky to have been immersed completely in the Chinese culture. I have seen stuff that cannot be described over a simple report. I have made new friends and have seen amazing gymnastics.
In any case, I have no time to write as I am at a coach's house, my new friend Wu. I am leaving for ZhengZhou tomorrow early to see a Youth level competition; exactly what I wanted to see here....I have to go, but if I have a chance I will try to write a better and more detailed report later.
Bye to all and talk to you soon.

On March 3, 2006, Shaena Bunce, Miranda Meyer, Stephanie McMullan and Brittany Ekstedt all attended a very special event at Rexall Place in Edmonton, home of the Oilers.
Fresh off her Olympic Gold Medal in Women's Hockey at the Torino Olympic Games, Captain Hayley Wickenheiser was honored before and during the March 3rd game.
Champions Gymnastics was asked to delegate young female athletes to walk in with Haley during the ceremony.
"The experience was marvelous for the girls...they got to ride in the Fanboni and they got to spend some private time with Haley, where she was nice enough to sign some autographs.", said Jodi Jang-Meyer, mother of Miranda Meyer, also accompanying the girls.
When asked by their coach how this special evening went, the girls were unanimous and said "Cool!". They were then told: "Let's just hope that one day our beloved Oilers will parade in a Gold medal gymnast, accompanied by young hockey players!"

"I am excited to take on this new challenge and I hope to contribute to the development of top quality gymnastics at Champions.
